Functional Dyspepsia

What is Functional Dyspepsia (FD)?

FD is characterized by all of the following at least once/week for 2 months:

  1. Bothersome fullness after meals
  2. Early sensation of fullness after eating
  3. Burning or pain just below the rib cage
  4. All diagnostic tests are normal, including endoscopy1

FD used to be referred to as “heartburn,” even though it has nothing to do with the heart!

Medical hypnosis is a very powerful tool for pain of all sorts, including FD.  Patients with FD are taught to recognize the onset of their uncomfortable sensations and then use their self-hypnosis (visualization) skills to control the discomfort until the episode has passed.
